Understanding your options

What does each type of care actually mean?

Long-term care comes in many forms. Understanding the differences helps you narrow the search before you start — and makes facility tours much more productive.

🏘️

Independent Living

$2,500 – $6,000+ / mo

For active, self-sufficient seniors who prefer a maintenance-free lifestyle. Private residences (apartments or cottages) with access to amenities and social activities. No medical care provided — maximum freedom and community.

🏥

Assisted Living Community

$3,000 – $7,000+ / mo

A larger residential community with private apartments and support for daily activities like meals, housekeeping, and personal care. Balances assistance with independence — ideal for those who want a social environment with a safety net.

🏡

Assisted Living Home

$2,000 – $5,000+ / mo

A smaller, home-like setting (typically 5–10 residents) with private or semi-private rooms. More intimate than a community, with support for daily activities. Best for those who want personal attention in a family atmosphere.

🧠

Memory Care Community

$4,800+ / mo

Specialized, secure care for those with Alzheimer's or dementia. Staff are trained specifically for memory care needs, and the environment is designed to reduce confusion, support daily routines, and maintain dignity.

🩺

Skilled Nursing Facility

$7,000 – $10,000+ / mo

Comprehensive medical care and rehabilitation for complex health needs. Around-the-clock staffing by nurses and healthcare professionals. For post-surgery recovery, serious illness, or chronic conditions requiring intensive support.

🎖️

Veteran Contracted Facility

May be available for eligible veterans through VA programs — ask Ranger if this applies to you

Facilities under contract with the VA to provide care for eligible veterans — often at significantly reduced or no cost. Ranger can help you determine eligibility and find contracted facilities near you.

Costs & Coverage
If you require home health or hospice services and need a doctor referral, reach out to your primary care physician for assistance. Alternatively, you can use our guide to find a mobile physician who can assess your eligibility and provide an order for the necessary services. IRIS can also help you understand what options exist and how to access them.
Medicare covers short-term skilled nursing care after a qualifying hospital stay (up to 100 days), home health services, and hospice care — but it does not cover custodial care (help with daily activities like bathing or dressing). For long-term residential care, most families use personal savings, long-term care insurance, or Medicaid (ALTCS in Arizona).
ALTCS (Arizona Long Term Care System) is Arizona's Medicaid program for individuals 65+ or people with disabilities who require nursing facility level of care. It can cover care in a nursing facility, assisted living, or even at home. Eligibility is based on both financial and functional criteria. IRIS can help you understand the application process and what to expect.
Options include: personal savings or retirement funds, long-term care insurance (if held), VA benefits (for veterans and their spouses), ALTCS/Medicaid for those who qualify, life insurance conversion programs, and reverse mortgages. Many families use a combination. IRIS can help you think through your specific situation and identify what applies.
When you tour a facility

Questions worth asking every time.

These questions help you compare facilities on what actually matters — staff, safety, flexibility, and how they handle the hard moments.

What levels of care do you provide, and how does transition work if needs change?
What specific services are included, and what costs extra?
What is the staff-to-resident ratio — during the day and overnight?
How do you ensure safety and security of residents?
Is there a registered nurse available on-site? What are their hours?
What measures are in place for medical emergencies?
Can I tour the facility and speak with current residents and their families?
What activities and programs are available for residents?
Are there restrictions on visiting hours or overnight guests?
How do you handle end-of-life care and family support?
What is your policy on medication management?
How do you handle grievances or concerns from residents or families?
Common Questions
Start by assessing the level of care needed — can your loved one manage daily activities independently, or do they need help with meals, bathing, and medication? Then consider budget, location, and personal preferences (prefer a home-like setting vs. a larger community?). IRIS can walk you through this assessment in a conversation and narrow the options for your specific situation.
Assisted living provides help with daily activities in a residential setting — meals, housekeeping, personal care — but is not a medical facility. Skilled nursing facilities (nursing homes) provide 24-hour medical care from licensed nurses and are appropriate for people with complex health conditions or recovering from surgery. The cost and level of care differ significantly between the two.
Signs it may be time to consider a higher level of care include: frequent falls or safety concerns at home, inability to manage medications, significant weight loss, increasing caregiver burnout, worsening memory or confusion, or a doctor's recommendation. IRIS can help you think through the indicators for your specific situation and what the next step might look like.
